July Swap Blocks

Is it possible that the month of July is almost over? - Sure it is! I have been on holiday in Brazil and it is hard to believe that a month went by. I only blinked my eyes!
Although it is winter time in Brazil I had a fantastic holiday and lots of work done - not in the crafts department, however managed to complete my SWAPs and here is a sneak preview.

These two blocks are for Gemma from Spain.
Gemma requested a heart block. I enjoyed making it and made two!

Block Swap update

I am glad the blocks I made for Blondie of Vintage Primitives are with its new owner.
This was a very enjoyable swap as we both like colours and scraps.

The swap was for one block, I got carried away and sent her these two blocks

all from scraps

and I also made this one but did not send it to her as I thought it is too dark! click on the picture and you can see how many tiny scraps were used!

On another note - I am off to a well earned and deserved holiday! I have been working non stop for far too long and although I will be enjoying my crafts and finishing off a couple of WIP, I will not be able to blog or to visit you all regularly.
Hope you all are enjoying the brief summer months.

June Block SWAP - sneak peak

This month my SWAP partners could not have been more different. Blondie from Vintage Primitives requested a colourful, scrappy block.
I said - wonderful. That's right up my alley!
I love colours. I love scraps.
Then I made Blondie a scrappy block - here is a shy sneak peak of it!
I can't show too much of it and I would like it to be a 'surprise'! Hope a good one.:) lol

then I got carried away and made another block for her.

this is it. It is scrappy and it is on its way to you.

and then my other SWAP partner for the Quilting Block Swap AUSTRALIA is Marie - and again a surprise for me! Marie requested a block in BLACK & WHITE!
That's new to me. I confess that I had doubts about making it but I thoroughly enjoyed making and I love it. I hope Marie will like it too.

Shopping Day

I am still working on several gifts and also crochet, but can't show my progress yet. Do not want to spoil the surprise for the friends receiving it.
Yesterday I had to go out and buy some more fabrics - just a treat - and what a wonderful treat this was.

details - how can anyone resist these cute little owls and turtles...

most of these fabrics are japanese 100% cotton and it feels so soft and silky.

I wish I could start working with these fabrics straight away - but discipline and time management are at essence at the moment.
It will have to wait until a well deserved holiday very soon!

Another May SWAP completed

phew!!! The block I made and sent out to my SWAP partner for the Block SWAP Adventure has finally arrived at its destination in America.
I was concerned as it took rather too long but am happy that Sunny from Quilting Dreams finally received it.
It was a lovely block to make and Sunny requested soft and muted colours.
Good thing our partners gives us a preference otherwise I'd have made it like a rainbow!

My May SWAP Partner sent me an email saying that she is now in possession of the block I made for her. I am so happy that all is done before the end of the month - well to be fastidious before middle of the month.

Today was a special mail day! I have received my Block SWAP from Sunny for our BLOCK SWAP ADVENTURE
This is going to be one of my favorites as the colours are exactly what I like! The pattern is so nice and I'd like to make that myself.
Thank you Sunny I really like my block

and Sunny requested any kind of flower baskets! Her colour preferences are: Soft, muted colors - exactly the opposite of me! I'd have made a flower basket full of bright reds, greens - real bright yellows... well not this time.
Here is a sneak peak of my block to her. I can't yet show it all as she has not yet received my block.

This is an unsual block and it is applique. Sunny is hooked on hexis so I included one for her. I hope you'll enjoy this block

When Royals Wed

Today is the day when Willian of Wales and Catherine Middleton are getting married at Westminster Abbey . This is more than a special occasion as not only we are having a national party but also taking part in the history.
Let's enjoy ourselves and congratulate UK's future King and Queen!

WIP, PIF and other things...

Some of you may be wondering where is all my craft posts and work?
Well I have been away from the scene but am working on the gifts for my PIF recipients and am planning other things for the end of the year. So here it a peek preview of my work in hand... I can only say that I am (literally) half way through it

yes it is crochet and lots of it!

The other day I baked an apple cake and it was delicious. I'd like to share the recipe with you.

5oz soft margarine
2 eggs
8 oz caster sugar
1 tea spoon of almond essence
8 oz Self Raising Flour
12 oz cooking apples
a little of flaked almonds to spread over the top.
Mix all the ingredients in a food processor or even with a hand whisker and put on a loose end baking tin. Bake for approx 40 minutes (fan heated oven at around 180).
Enjoy it.

moist on the inside and a lovely aroma of apples and almond. A nice cup of tea = Total Bliss!

I have made and sent out my partner's block for Quilting Block Swaps (Australia) and this month my partner is Leona's Quilting Adventure. She's now received it. Here is a picture of her block.

I very much enjoyed making this block name 'Antique Tile' and the variations are endeless.

I usually am quite 'afraid' of trying new things and specially when it come to colours I stick with pale, pastel as I am hopeless with colour co-ordination.
Not any more (I think it is the spring sunshine!!)
This is the block I made for April SWAP Block Swap Adventure

I used Kaffe Fasset fabric for a bright, modern look - as requested by my partner. I hope she will like it.
I am rather pleased with the final result. The block is called Dutchaman's Puzzle and very enjoyable to make and sew.

Hoot, hoot - another Bruna

I have been a lucky girl receiving a parcel from Sue and inside it there was this gorgeous little owl. This one is for me to keep since my dear Bruna has now flown the nest

She is adorable and thank you Sue for this lovely gift.

Together was this most useful sewing mat - so practical since I am forever losing my tools between the fabrics.

I am now working on the PIF gifts that I will be sending to some other blogfriends very soon.

Brother Sewing Machine

I bought a new Sewing Machine. This is a computerized Sewing Machine and I am learning how to use it. It is a Brother Innov-is 50
The reason I had to buy a new machine was that I still can't use my right foot and this one is amazing as I can start sewing just pressing a button. I do not have to use a foot pedal. Marvelous!

There are 135 stitches in total.

One of the facilities that really impressed me was the fact that I can sew stretch fabrics. It is amazing and how easy it does it.
Another magic feature is threading the neede. No more squinting and bending and suffering to put the thread through the eye of the needle. The machine does it all.

No more delays in getting my SWAP blocks to my partners now!

Enjoying the spring and am off the learn more about my new machine.

I received a very sweet gift from Dorinha's Pastimes wishing me well after my fall and badly hurt foot.

(the fall I had back beginning of January was a typical YBF situation. I was in Brazil and the weather was dreadful Too hot and too wet! One of my mares was due to give birth. I went out on the fields very early morning to check her out and as I was walking my dogs came running after me... yes Preta (the dog on the right), just run on me and knocked me on the floor.

She hit me on the back of my right leg and the fall I suffered was ugly. Well I am still hopping around but much better).

These are the lovely gifts Dorinha sent me.

the 'Get Well' card is hand made. Cross Stitch embroidery and beads. Absolutely gorgeous. A little treasure.
and there is the key holder OWL - she says it is to remind me of BRUNA (the owl I rescued) and it is one the the cutest things I have seen. look at this!

The Girl is back in Town...

Finally... the Eagle has landed!
I am back 'at home' and hopefully life will be back to normal again.
I'd like to say a big thank you to all of you sending me 'Get well' messagens and I am happy to say that am nearly good as gold.

Bruna - The Owl

I am sorry for my absence and I'd like to thank you all for the lovely messages and well wishes whilst I am still recovering from a fall. My foot is on the mend and although I still can not walk or stand for longer periods I am much better and hoping to shortly return to normal life.
Whilst 'enjoying the good life' and trying to sit still to recover I got a new activity.

I'd like you to meet my newest 'adopted baby'. This is Bruna.
An owl that I have been caring for since her early hours after birth! (Athene Cunicularia)

As a small chick Bruna fell from its nest and every attempt was made to return her to her natural habitat. I tried but she was not accepted by her natural mother. Since then She's been cared for by me and she is growing into a beautiful wild bird .

the day she was found ... alone, cold, so small and dependent! So pretty!

one week (maybe 10 days) old. tiny little thing. - Growing up happy and healthy (almost wild)

Bruna is now 6 weeks old (approx) and I am hopping she'll soon be in a position to fly away...

I entered a block swap with Block Swap Adventure and there are so many new members that we will be able to swap blocks for over two years without repeating the same partner.

Living in the countryside one can appreciate the small gifts that Mother Nature often give us.
Some weeks ago I saw a stray cat. He might have been abandoned on the main road and made his way to the house (it is a remote area and a mile away from the any road) At that time he looked skinny and dirty, quite feral (maybe just afraid) and was in bad shape. Since then I have been feeding him and today for the first time he allowed me to come quite close (only 3 feet away) and I took his picture and afterwards he had a good meal!

Now if you look closely to this picture where Bruno (this is his name) is feeding, you'll see in the distance another wild creature.

She, The Dear, in the distance is asking what is all the fuss about. Can she come to the garden and have some nibbles too?

I am so fortunate! Every day I am thankful for my life, my family and blog friends. I have met wonderful people and I have been exchanging emails and comments for awhile with Soraia Melo from So Artes Criativas when we decided to do a SWAP sending each other FQ - typical fabrics of each country UK/USA (she's a Brazilian now living in the USA).
Here is a very generous and sweet gift she sent me.

wow... 13 FQ and some of them are 1/2 metre and 2 are batik. I am beaming with excitement!

She made me this gorgeous little bag, with the cuttest fabric possible and a matching needle case, a little box of chocs ... all the way from San Francisco/CA

I did enjoy taking part and making the gifts for my first PIF last year that I have decided to do it again. This year I made gifts to Isadora; to Maria Regina; to Cristiane from Brazil (Cristiane does not have a blog) and to Juju (no blog). You can see the gifts that I've made here.
OK you are supposed to three gifts, I got carried away...

I have been lucky to be awarded one gift from Marj and here it is my gift.
Marj has been exceedingly generous with her time making this fabulous bag. I love it!!

By 20th of December 2010 I will select three individuals, one from my followers, one person who's left me a comment on any post of my blog and one other individual. That's it.

last week it was a bit of a struggle to get things done! So many other things got in the way of sewing but I am happy to see how many flowers I have made since.

PIF - My gift

That's what I have received through the mail yesterday! This is a most generous gift to me by Eclectic Quilter when I signed up her PIF earlier this year

No - Clipper was not included...snif snif

This is one the most beautiful and practical bags I have seen. So very well made and Marj must have put a number of hours making it. The finishing is excellent.
Together with the bag there was a lovely Quilt Pattern, some yummy chocolates, A kittens pocket diary and a useful retractable tape measure.

Thank you Marj I like it very much and am using it (already) for sewing and crochet things to keep safe in this gorgeous bag.

UK Border Agency (Customs) were so jealous that they decided to charge VAT as if the good were imported from the USA - arrgh!!!

I have 2 SWAP at the moment
the first one is this Pincushion I have made for the SWAP organised by Quilting Jeannet. My partner is Gerry from the Netherlands but she does not have a blog.
I have made a Spinning Wheel pincushion embroidered in Cross Stitch for Gerry and sent also a small counted cross stitch design together with a crochet flower. I hope she'll enjoy it.

The sunset it is a time for peace, relaxation and reconciliation when I very much enjoy admiring Mother Nature's and our own achievements of the day.

Good Neighbours

when was it the last time that your neighbour called in and brought you a small gift?
Our neighbour called in today and with no other reason or to borrow anything else brought us these lovely freshly laid eggs.

It is such a rare situation today. I am lucky.

We sat down and had a lovely cup of tea and a slice of apple cake. Whilst we were talking, just outside the kitchen window another unexpected guest arrived...

I must say that this was a coincidence. No relation between the eggs and this lovely bird.
These eggs are hen chicken but maybe Mr Pheasant was checking it out!!

Fabric swatches from the 18th century tell stories of mother and babies parting

THREADS OF FEELING at The Foundling Museum is guaranteed to pull heartstrings this winter. The exhibition is a collection of fabric swatches left by mothers forced to abandon their newborn babies to the care of the Foundling Hospital.

Between 1741 and 1760, over 4,000 babies were left to the hospital, and institution built specifically to house abandoned children in Britain. Mother with little or no income would hand their babies over in the hope they would receive greater care than they could provide. With their children they would leave a keepsake, often in the form of embroidered material, fabric patches or ribbons, hoping they might some day be reunited. Many of the pieces were thought to have come from the clothing of the mother, each telling a different story of heartache at separation and maternal sacrifice.

Asparagus and Cheese Tart

Nothing better than good home made food. Simple, quick and wholesome. Made with a pinch of this and that and... lots of love!
Today I made Asparagus quiche and it was Delicious!
To make it you'll need:
A small bunch of asparagus (some 12/15 stalks)
2 eggs
40 gr grated Cheddar Cheese
200 ml fresh cream (optional)
chopped parsley, salt and pepper

for the pastry you will need:
110gr plain flour
a pinch of salt
25 gr lard
25 gr margarine
cold water
an 8inch (20cm) round flan tin, greased

Prepare the pastry mixing all the ingredients then roll it out and line a flan dish with it. Prick the base all over with a fork and cook for 10/15 minutes (180C)

Prepare the asparagus the usual way only half cooked then cut into 4cm lengths. Arrange the asparagus evenly over the pastry base and sprinkle on the cheese

now whisk the eggs until frothy and beat them into the cream together with the chopped parsley, salt and fresh milled pepper.
Pour the misture over the asparagus and cheese.

Place the tart on the pre-heated baking sheet in the oven for 40/45 minutes or until the centre is firm and the filling golden-brown and puffy.
Delicious eaten hot or cold.

I like mine hot and with salads!

Carrot and Coriander Soup

I believe the summer is officially over! It must be when one starts to think that a hot bowl of soup would be nice for lunch.
The carrots around here are very sweet, so I've decided to make the simplest soup of them all.Carrot and Coriander.

So simple, quick and nutritious.
I actually only use fresh coriander instead of the powder. The taste and smell is so good!

we are having some beautiful sunset each day and it is quite melancholic as it is showing the end of the summer and the evenings are drawing in quite fast.

Whilst I am still working - not as much as I would like to - on my Celtic Lady I often take little breaks to do other projects.

This is a cross stitch I have made a little while ago and it was fun and quick to do. I'll probably make another pincushion from it though I feel sorry to pin a sharp needle on the cat's head!!!

This Hexi is for my blogging friend Dorinha who's a very creative and talented crafts woman. We had the opportunity to meet for a short break whilst I was in Brazil and we got on really well.
We made a couple of crochet doilies together and she loves small crochet so I made these tiny flowers for her. Her skills have greatly improved over the last months.

Earlier this year I organized a PIF to various people here, here
and here. Still in the same spirit, I have sent this tiny Brooch in crochet that I made to Sandy from El Eincon de Sandy A lady I've met at a Quilt Shop in Oxfordshire almost a year ago. We have become friends despite the geographic distance between us. She's been away for awhile from blogsphere, so I thought of sending this little gift to her.

Pineapple Pattern
The Pineapple pattern is said to have originated with the pinecone design found pn the textiles and china of India and Persia. Since the shape of the pinecone looks like a pineapple, it became known as the Pineapple Pattern. It is the most popular pattern with the lovers of crochet because it is gorgeous looking.
The doily above was made specially for a friend from the blog Dorinha´s Pastimes. Dorinha and her family became good friends through the blogland and whilst visiting me in Brazil she expressed her passion for the Pineapple Pattern.

A week ago on a sunny afternoon when the boys were horse riding we sat together and these doily in crochet came to life!
the doily below is the one she made for me. Beautiful pattern and colour (the techinic is one of my favourite like the square table cloth I made some time ago.

Any life has its share of hardship - If one gets to the age I am now and has crossed an ocean and lost parents and child - but I feel it is uncontroversial to state that I have had in my life my share os hardship more than most.
Crying is pointless, as though it implies you think someone might see you and take pity on you, which in turn assumes they can do something to help - and early on I found that no one could!
Now and then all the while I weep I am aware of the sensuous pleasure of it; the tears stroking my face like warm fingers offering comfort.
Memory is one of the most beautiful realities of the soul.

this is the harvest of satsumas from that tree!. I have blended some of the fruits and then frozen it as juice to be enjoyed at later date.

This is my STRIP TWIST. It measures approx. 2.00 x 2.20mt including borders.

My 2 dogs are back from the Vet.
They look so unhappy not being able to run around but this is for their own good.
They have been ´fixed´and now are safe.
I could not resist and made them a little pyjama all white and pink. It helped to protect whilst they had the stithes on.

This is the new addition to my household. They are sisters and approx. 7 months old.
I have adopted the two little things after seeing them abandoned, lost and hungry on the roads in Sao Paulo.
I could not resist and took them to my home and now they are happy, healthy and running around making friends with my other permanent residents, the cats and horses.

this is a cushion cover made for Juju my dearest Friend and the colours were of her choice.
I enjoyed it very much and I made a different little thing for the back of the cushion.

The simple life

I have been working in a complete different environment. It is in the country in the middle of nowhere and I am working in the land and with animals.
Yesterday at the end of the day as I was comming home, I went through the orchard and here is the 'harvest' I´ve picked up. The fuits will be consumed after supper and also for tomorrow´s breakfast.
There are 2 avocados, oranges, lemons (for a fresh home made lemonade), sharon fruits and ´jabuticabas´. Heavenly delicious.

Today I've received my winnings from the giveaway by Playroom Banter and Bebe sent me the most beautiful parcel together with some very precious information as well. It read "...the fabric is about 30 years and comes from my mother's (Dottie Rose) fabric stash! I've kept it all these years and now it is yours! Happy Valentines Day!"
Thank you Bebe and it is very sweet and generous of you. I feel very honoured by it.

On another note, I have been a busy bee with a Spring Surprise Swap 2010 being organised by the Dutch Sisters and also my PIF and here is a peek preview of some of my work.

SPRING SURPRISE SWAP'10

This SWAP is being organised by the Dutch Sisters and there are more than 75 participants to date... and I am one of them. The closind date to register is 31st Jan'10.
At the moment I have some WIP on crochet; cross stitch; tapestries and of course... quilts. I am very keen to learn new techniques in quilt making however as always I get 'stuck' with colour co-ordination. Nevertheless am still trying. - why is that I can never do only one thing at the time? - I have to have several pieces of work on the go!!

Maybe it is just something that GOOD women do!!! Are you one of those?

So for these new projects I am involved with I shall pe giving away only what I can do reasonable well... and I hope my crafts/quilting partners will enjoy it.

Hexagon Table runner

I have finished the top of my hexagon table runner and this being my first hand pieced work I am quite happy with the visual. It is fun doing this work.
CURIOSITY:- There are approx 37,000 hand stitches on these 206 hexagons... ...and not counting the tacking

as usual I have used some of the small pieces of fabrics I had, and I must learn how to measure the amount of fabric needed before starting my next project!

Melt Down, Rain, flooding and Tea Time

The snow is almost over and the ground now is over saturated with water and sadly we will have the next major problems with flooding. My heart goes for those whose properties are in a 'danger zone' and I am very fortunate for not living nearby any river. I have sad memories as a child (5 years old) when once we had our house totally destroyed by flooding...

As usual, I enjoy my cup of tea with a freshly baked cake and here is one I baked earlier...
Banana Loaf and tea
This is a delicious and very easy to make loaf.
I am not good for recipes, too old fashion of just adding this and that but here it is:
1 banana
1 egg
2 oz soft butter
5 oz sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda
5 oz SR flour
Mix together all the ingredients leaving the flour to be the last one
Bake on a medium hot oven until golden brown and totally dry inside.

During these cold, damp and dull days, there is nothing better than to enjoy a cup of tea with with cakes and the company of good friends...

I am slowing getting back into 'normal' life and hopefully soon will be showing some more crafts and please, do not forget to read my earlier post PIF I am in a very generous mood at the moment...
